I recently found this information on Larkin Sellers and
Family, at the Morgan County  Courthouse, Jacksonville Illinois.

1850 Census of Illinois, Morgan County.
Larkin Sellers, 44, Farmer, (1400 real estate) b. TN.
                   Mary, 40, b. N.C.
                   Josiah, 19, Farmer ,b. TN.
                   Nancy, 15, b. TN.
                   Mary, 13, b.TN.
                   Margaret, 12, b.TN.
                   Martha, 12, b.TN.
                   Harriet, 6, b.TN.
                   Lucinda, 4, b.TN.
                   Thomas, 1, b.TN.
                   John, 20, Farmer, b. TN.

Is this the same Larkin Sellers of Robertson County
Tennessee?
Did he and his family move to Morgan Co. Il., only to
return to Robertson Co. TN.?
Some of the children's names are the same as the ones
listed in his will.

                   Let me know what you
think.................................Dan S.

The info. on Larkin Sellers and family came from an updated,
typed version of the 1850 Illinois Federal Census, Morgan County. Info. is located
in the County Clerk Office(records room), along with the same for 1860 & 1870,
possibly placed there by the local Genealogical Society. There are other Sellers
listed in these records, not related to me. I can get them and post, but I don't know
who you already have. Back to Larkin Sellers, I'm not saying this is the same one
from Robertson Co. TN., but Larkin's father Howell Sellers did live in nearby Pike
Co. Illinois. I also tried to contact Oleen Pollard, but no luck, maybe she changed
her email address. I'll contact you again soon with more information.

           Sellersgen@aol.com

Larken (cq) Sellers is found in the 1820 census of Robertson Co., TN, 26 to
45 years old, living with him are one female age 16-26 and a boy under 10.

Howell Sellars (cq), b. 1762 in Chatham or Charlotte Co., NC, who said he
was originally from South Carolina, is found in the same Robertson Co., TN 1820
census.  (The same Howell of course is later in Pike Co., IL and was a
Revolutionary War veteran.)

Morgan and Pike today have some common border in west central Illinois, with
Scott County lying between them for many miles.  Pike and Sangamon were
created in 1821, and Morgan was carved out of Pike in 1823.  Has anyone
looked at land records for these names?  Howell Sellers made an 1830
purchase of 80 ac. on Nov. 3, 1830.  The land was in what was then Menard County.
Howell Sellers said he resided at that time in Sangamon County, IL.
Sangamon, Morgan and Pike were adjacent counties with Sangamon the most
easterly and Morgan in the middle from 1825 to 1839.

These two men are of an age to be brothers?

                                                   I double checked today,
Illinois Census, Morgan Co. 1850.
No further info. on Larkin Sellers and family. I
also checked the 1860 and   1870 Census for this family, but found nothing.

Same results when I looked
through the deed information. I did find one more

1889 PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM OF MORGAN AND SCOTT COUNTIES, ILLINOIS. Chicago, Chapman Brothers Morgan County IL (reprinted by the Jacksonville Area Genealogical and Historical Society, 1984)

SEBASTIAN KUMLE, the owner of 520 broad acres of land, usually may be found at his homestead in township 15, range 8, where his interests have centered for many years. He may be most properly termed a self-made man, having worked his way up from a modest beginning to a good position socially and financially. From his substantial German ancestry he inherited the qualities requisite to the formation of an honest man and a good citizen, and is thus regarded most unquestionably by all who know him.

A native of his Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, our subject was born Jan. 20, 1830, and lived there until a young man of twenty years, receiving a good education in his native tongue, and becoming familiar with agricultural pursuits. He was always thoughtful beyond his years, and saw little in his own country to encourage him in carrying out his ambition for the future. He finally decided to emigrate to America, and shipping from the port of Bremen landed in New York City after a safe voyage on a sailing vessel.

Soon thereafter, leaving the metropolis, young Kumle proceeded southwestward across the Mississippi to St. Louis, Mo., where he sojourned two years. Thence he came to this county from Jacksonville, went into the country, and found employment as a farm laborer. He was thus occupied one year, and the next rented a tract of land and commenced farming on his own account. The next important event in his life was his marriage, in 1852, with Miss Gertrude K. Rushe, a native of his own country, who emigrated to America with her brother in July, 1850.

Mr. Kumle operated as a renter until 1863, and in the meantime had accumulated sufficient money to purchase 140 acres of land. This was mostly under cultivation, but there were no buildings upon it. He put up a house and barn and gradually added the other buildings necessary for his convenience. Later he purchased 185 acres, which constitutes the present homestead. It will thus be seen that he was prospered from the beginning. He always made it a rule to live within his income, and was prompt in meeting his obligations. In addition to general agriculture, he raises in large numbers cattle, horses and swine, making a specialty of the latter and of Norman trotting and saddle horses. In this industry he has been particularly successful, achieving an enviable reputation.

To our subject and his estimable wife there have been born five children, the eldest of whom, a son, Joseph, is a well-to-do farmer and stock-raiser; he married Miss Mary Dayton, and they have three children - Fred, William and John. A. L. married Miss Ella Coultas, is a farmer by occupation, and the father of two children, a son, Harry, and a babe unnamed; William F. and John Emil remain at home with their parents; Mary is the wife of Hardman Seller, a native of Germany, who crossed the Atlantic when fifteen years old, and is carrying on farming in this county; they have five children - Gertrude, Kate, Mary, Ann E., and Joseph.

Mr. Kumle, with his family, belongs to the Catholic Church. In politics he votes independently, aiming to support the principles and not men. It certainly should be a matter of pride to Mr. Kumle and his family that their surroundings are so pleasant as to elicit praise from passers-by. To an equal extent will the view of their home, given in this volume, attract the admiration of many readers.

1906 INDEX

KUMLE, Sebastian, (deceased), formerly a prosperous farmer near Alexander, Morgan County, Ill., was born January 20, 1830, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, where he spent the first twenty years of his life. At the end of that period, having had a good mental training in the public schools, and being reared to agricultural pursuits, he came to the United States to begin an independent career. Soon after arriving in this country he went to St. Louis, where he remained two years. He then made his home in Morgan County, Ill., where he secured employment as a farm laborer, subsequently renting land and beginning agricultural operations on his own account. By perseverance, industry and economy, he had accumulated sufficient money by the year 1863 to purchase a farm, which, through the same diligence and frugality, was rapidly increased and improved. Besides general farming, he entered largely into the raising and selling of fine horses, cattle and hogs, and in this became very successful. He was a man of untiring energy and rigid honesty. His busy life reached its termination July 28, 1901.

In 1852, Mr. Kumle was united in marriage with Gertrude K. Rush, a native of Germany who emigrated to the United States with her brother in 1850. Of the family of children born to them, five survive, namely: Joseph, a farm and stock-raiser of Alexander, Ill.; Alves L., a farmer and Deputy Sheriff of the same place, a sketch of whose life appears in this connection; William F.; John Emil; and Mary, wife of Hardman Seller, a farmer of Morgan County. The deceased was one of the old residents of Morgan County, whose rugged virtues and sterling worth developed the region to its present condition.
