WHITECAPS AGAIN

Two Men and a Woman Receive Attention in Crawford County, Indiana

Corydon, Indiana, April 20-The whitecaps flogged two men and a woman at English, Crawford County, Tuesday night.  Bob Broomfield, James Sellers and Mrs. Wilson were the victims, and the charge against them was that they had been guilty of immoral conduct.  Broomfield and Sellers were punished quite severely, Broomfield received 150 lashes and Sellers 125.  Mrs. Wilson was given only 25 lashes but was warned that unless she reformed she would be given a hundred the next time.  The three were taken a short distance from town and tied together to a tree and, after having been divested of their clothes, were given their punishment in broken doses.

Mrs. Wilson begged piteously that she be spared, but the whitecaps were merciless.  At the end of the 25 lashes, the wretched woman was apparently in a dead faint and was spared further torture.  The whitecaps then rode away to the residences of other disreputables to notify them to leave the country or take the consequences.  Several people who have been warned have fled to Kentucky.

SEPT 2006

I have a copy of a record of sale of property from Benjamin F. Denbo to Susan A Sellers, state of Indiana, Crawford county. Dated May 2, 1883. Along with that I have a copy of a record of sale of property from Susan A. Sellers to Linda Chapple, state of Indiana, Crawford County. The Sellers/Chapple record is signed by Susan A. Sellers and James P. Sellers, dated April 12, 1884. In the body of the Sellers/Chapple item it is stated that "said James P Sellers having no interest in said real estate or the purchase money thereof only joins with his said wife to enable her to convey the same, with the opp.......to hold the same unto herself and heirs and assigns forever."

Have a copy of the census for Boone township, County of Crawford, Indiana dated June 28, 1880...listing Phillip Scollars, wife Annie, Son William, Daughter Mary C. and daughter Nancy E. (Maybe this Phillips' first name is James.) Wife Annie's first name is probably Susanna McGuire Sellers. Susanna and James Sellers were married 7/24/1873 in Crawford County, Indiana. Their daughter Mary C. (Mary Catherine) is my grandmother, born in Indiana in 1877 and married Lawrence Power of BRACKEN COUNTY,Ky. Possible connection here? Maybe somebody can make one..would certainly help me. Thanks, Mary Ann Case Ashworth formerly of Bracken County, Ky. transplanted to Pasadena, California

Am researching the journey of Catherine Gray, born 1810 in Harrison County,
Indiana to Thomas Ellis Gray & Sarah Frakes.  Catherine married William
Richeson/Richardson on 12/31/1840 in Harrison County, Indiana.  They had
one
daughter, Delana born about 1846; and one son William, born about 1848.
Catherine's second marriage was on 6/2/1853 to James McGuire in Crawford
County, Indiana.  They had several sons, and one daughter, Susanna McGuire
who married James Philip Sellers/Philip James Sellers.  Susanna "Annie" was
born in December 1855 in Indiana.  Annie and James had three children. One
son, William born about 1874-1875.  Two daughters, Mary Catherine, born
1877
in either Milltown or Leavenworth, Indiana and Nancy born about 1880.
Something happened to the parents, the children went to an orphanage (where
I
don't know) and they never saw each other again.  I need any help anyone
has
to offer.

Mary Catherine Sellers born 10/13/1877 in Indiana; married Lawrence Power
8/8/1896 in Bracken County;  She died in Bracken County 8/30/1949.  Her
parents were James P. Sellers and Annie McGuire.  James P. was possibly
from
Bracken County; Annie was from Indiana.

Amanda Frances King was born 1/17/1872 in Bracken County; married Lawrence
Case on 12/15/1889; and died 4/8/1955 in Bracken County, Ky.  She was the
daughter of Abner and Lydia King.

Anybody related to these folks?

My Cincinnati-based research in the 1970s included a finding of Allen
Davenport Sellers, b. 11-13-1833 in Union Township, Crawford County,
Indiana.
Son of Thomas and Diadema Curtis Sellers of that place.  Information was
from a "Request for Information" in the "Indiana Magazine of History," Vol.
36, pg. 416.

The item said he sold his land in Union Township, Crawford Co., IN on April
1, 1835.  My question is: Could this be the same Thomas Sellers who settled
in Mercer County, IL in 1835?  Information on this Thomas Sellers is found
in a published History of Mercer County, IL, dated 1882.  See pg. 733.

Thomas Sellers is listed in the 1830 and 1840 Crawford County, IN Census.

Then Thomas is listed in the 1850 Warren County, IL Census.

Then 1856, 1860, and 1870 Harrison County, IA Census.  In the 1880 Harrison
County Census he's living with his son-in-law Barton S. Parker and daughter
Eliza Jane Sellers.  He died January 10, 1883 in Harrison County, IA.

What does the History of Mercer County, IL say?  What years does it say he
was there?
