BALTIMORE CO, MD (made in 1659-original county) At that time it included parts of (or the whole of) todays: Harford Co., Cecil Co., Frederick Co. & Carroll Co.

When researching Baltimore county before ca 1820, you will encounter two terms referring to an area of land. One of the terms is Hundreds and the other is parishes Hundreds as a political subdivision date back to the Roman occupation of Britian. Their are several variations of the orginial meaning of the term. The most commonly accepted is that is was an area that contained 100 families. Another variation is that it was an area that was large enough to raise an army of 100 men. From the late 1600s to early 1800s in Maryland the term was applied as a political subdivision of the county primarily for tax purposes and judicial affairs. The latter being that there was a constable appointed for each hundred and a justice of the peace for each hundred. The 1790 and 1810 Federal census for Baltimore county are at least partially broken down by hundreds. The equivalent term today for a hundred is an election district within the county. Although Maryland was founded by Catholics (the family of Lord Baltimore), its religion was dominated by Puritans in the 1650s and then later the Church of England. In June of 1692 the General Assembly passed an act that essentially established the Church of England as the "state church", required the establishement of parish boundaries and also required each parish to establish a register of births, marriages, and deaths within the province.

When Baltimore county was first settled, there were no roads, except a few indian paths; thus, travel was mostly by water, and you will find persons styled in terms of where they lived. For example in early deeds, people are styled as: William Boulton of Bush River, Richard Ball of Patapsco, John Lee planter of Bush River. The early Hundreds were thus often named for rivers. When Baltimore county was fist formed, its boundaries ran from the ridge dividing the watershed of the Magothy and Patapsco Rivers around to the Sassafras River. Thus it included todays Cecil county, and Harford county, parts of Carroll, Anne Arundel, and Howard counties. Also since the early boundaries were not fixed it probably also extended into Delaware and Pennsylvania. Cecil County was formed in 1674 at which point the northern eastern boundary of Baltimore county became the Susquehanna River. A formal boundary between Baltimore and Anne Arundel county was initially laid out in 1698.

By 1698 is appears there were three hundreds in Baltimore county, the Patapsco Hundred (which ran from the south side of the Patapsco River to the north) the Gunpowder Hundred, and the Spesutia Hundred. The original county seat was at Spesutia Island off the Bush River. Apparently there was a town of Baltimore in this location in 1683. In 1707 the General Assembly directed that a twon be erected on 50 acres called "Taylors Choice" and that the county courthouse be erected there. This land was off the Gunpowder river. However in November 1712 an act of the Assembly directled that the courthouse be erected in the town of Joppa.

There were three parishes established in Baltimore County in the 1690s. These were St Pauls, St Johns, and St Georges. The parish boundaries roughly corresponded to the boundaries of the three hundreds:
St Paul's Parish was the Patapsco Hundred
St John's Parish was the Gunpowder Hundred
and St George's Parish was the Sesputia Hundred

In 1727 the Boundary between Anne Arundel and Baltimore counties was changed so that all land on the south side of the Patapsco river was to be in Anne Arundel county.

As the county's population grew, new hundreds were created. Also because of the distances to the churches, "chapels of ease" were built. These later became their own parish. St Thomas Parish was created in 1742 and the chaple was built near Garrison Forest as part of St Paul's Parish for the western part of the county, and St James was created at Monkton in 1750 as a chapel of ease for St John's Parish. St James was recognized as an independent parish in 1777.

Since 1851 Baltimore City and Baltimore County have been two completely separate enities, each with their own records.

from ROBERT SOLLARS
Robert C. Sollars [rcsollars@comcast.net]

1777 -BALTIMORE COMMITTEE TO COUNCIL - In Committee Baltimore 31st Jan. 1777 - Gentlemen,
We received your letter of the 26th Inst. and in consequence called a general meeting of our committee to consider on the expediency of the march of the militia. There is now four battalions formed, one other we request you send Commissions for immediately and is composed of the following companies; A long list of names followed including that of "SABRIT SELLERS (SABRITT SOLLERS), 1st. Lieutenent"
We find after looking over the different Battalions that they composed about 2100 men at their return, but from the great number already inlisted in the land and sea service we imagine they do not amount to more than 1500. Under the present circumstances we do not think it expedient or prudent that more than one third should march as we have certain inteligence that three or four Men of War are now in the Bay and as high up as Guynn's Island and the great number of Tories among us and the necessary Guards now wanting here.

Sabritt Sollers, Jr.,: Maryland Gazette, 12 August 1756: "Capt. S. Gardner, at Mr. Carys's Inn in Baltimore, reports a deserter, Sabrit Sellers, junior, aged about 24, who enlisted as a private soldier in Major-General Lascelles's Regiment. He has probably gone to Patapsco Neck where his mother and some relatives live." (This charge was likely resolved, as nothing appears have have come of it. Sabritt Jr. served as a 1st Lieutanant during the Revolutionary War:

This Sabritt, Jr. left no descendants. He was 1st Lt. Sabritt Sollers, Jr. in 1777 (during the Revolutionary War).

1778 - SABRETT SOLLERS (SABARETH SOLLARS), February 8, 1778: NATHAN SMITH, Baltimore to Gov. THOMAS JOHNSON, Annapolis;
James Calhoun desires Lt. (William) Judah to bring to Annapolis MOORE and STERLING, said to have deserted the 9th Regiment(VIRGINIA); 5 men of Smith's Command were indicted for Robbery of SABARETH SOLLARS; they are now convicted and under death sentence; none has ever been courtmartialed or tried before; four men were enlisted in 1776; SAMUEL COIL was in Capt.
(Alexander) Furnavall's Company; they could serve in a frigate or the row gallies, CHARLES CLOSE and JAMES MATHIAS are worthy of mercy because they have never been found guilty of a misdemeanor; MATHIAS has a wife [a good sort of woman] and a child; JAMES BADLEY promoted the robery; all the men were very drunk. (A.L.S.2PP)

1778 - SAMUEL COIL of Baltimore Co., MD: married CATHERINE BRADY, April 17, 1778, in St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore Co., MD by Reverand THOMAS CHASE.

1783 - TAX LIST OF BALTIMORE COUNTY, MARYLAND - PIPE CREEK HUNDRED
(Legend: Tax Payer - number of other white inhabitants - Tracts of land owned & acreage ) SABRITT SELLARS (SOLLERS): "Lasting Pasture" 100 acres; "pt. Elledges Farm"
66 acres; "Addition to William" 100 acres; "pt. Goodwill" 32 acres;
pt. William Refused" 161 acres; "Hookers Fancy" 22-1/2 acres; pt.
Butlers Farm" 113 acres.

The Sabritt/Sabrell the maiden name of Sabritt Sollers Sr., mother Ann, was passed down through several generations as a given name within the family: 1785-SABRITT SOLLERS (SABRET SOLLARS)
married ANN RUSSELL, Mar. 3, 1785, Prince George's County, MD.
1787-SABRITT SOLLERS (SABRET SOLLARS)
married MARY GORDON, May 10, 1787, Prince George's County, MD.
NOTE: This Sabritt was the son of Thomas Sollers (1730-1783) who was an elder brother of Sabritt Sollers, Jr. (1732-1788). Thomas Sollers was 2nd Major of Gun Powder Battalion, Baltimore County Maryland Militia. Commissioned 25 May 1776. Justice of the Peace, Balt. Co., Court, 1774. Naval Officer Port of Baltimore 1780-83. Member of the Committee of Correspondence in 1776.
-----------------------------------------------------------

1786 - SABRITT SOLLERS, BALTIMORE CO., MARYLAND, (son of Sabritt & Mary Heighe Sollers) had his Will drawn up August 19, 1786 in Baltimore Co. Maryland. This may have been prompted by his brother Heighe's death: Heighe died intestate. See Sabritt, 13, Feb. 1788 - WILL proved.

1788 - SABRITT SOLLERS, BALTIMORE CO., MD (WILL drawn up Aug.19, 1786 - Probated Feb. 13, 1788, Baltimore Co., MD - Will Bk#1, p.159). He left no direct heirs. An abstract follows:

WILL OF SABRITT SOLLERS OF BALTIMORE COUNTY, MARYLAND
Property to ELEANOR WATERS, neice, to NANCY CROMWELL, neice, and to ELISHA SOLLERS, a desk, bookcase, books and all personality. To my sister MARY BOWEN, silver coffee pot and to her daughter ELEANOR WATERS, the silver pot. To ELISHA SOLLERS, all the residue of my plate, one third of the tablespoons, one-half dozen spoons to SALLY SOLLERS. Whereas my mother's estate and my brother HEIGHE's estate have not been settled, the papers for them are in my desk. Copies of HEIGHE's investments are there also. There has always been an account between my brother HEIGHE and me and also between my brother THOMAS SOLLERS and me. Sabritt divided his holdings equally between his nephews THOMAS SOLLERS (eldest son of Thomas Sollers,Sr.) and ELISHA SOLLERS (youngest son of
Heighe): Sabritt's "SOLLERS POINT" plantation was described as follows: Value of the dwelling and plantation of the late Sabritt Sollers, about 297 acres of cleared land, 100 acres of woods all enclosed by a pretty good fence, about 30 acres meadow, dwelling house, barn, and grainery much out of repair. Good orchard in good order. Under oath to say that such a
plantation to be worth 90 Pounds of rent per annum. NOTE: Sabritt son of
Sabritt & Mary Heighe Sollers. Heighe's eldest son William must have been deceased by this time or well fixed for only Elisha is mentioned.
