20th CENTURY HISTORY OF STEUBENVILLE & JEFFERSON CO, OH
by JOSEPH B. DOYLE, 1910
Page ?
The next organization formed by Mr. Snodgrass was the Two Ridge
Presbyterian Church, on the Steubenville and Richmond Pike, about nine
miles west of the former place. The congregation was formed about 1802
or 1803, the people meeting in various places until 1810, when the first
place of worship was erected. Mr. Snodgrass was succeeded by Rev.
William McMillan, who continued pastor of this and Yellow Creek
        Church
, afterwards Bacon Ridge, for six years. *Cellars and James Bailey,
to whom Samuel Thompson, Andrew Anderson, George Day and
Thomas Elliott were added. A new house of worship was erected in
1816, and afterwards on May 21, 1819, Rev. Thomas Hunt became
pastor of this and Yellow Creek Churches, which arrangement continued
until 1828, when he devoted his entire time to Two Ridges and remained
        until October 4, 1836.

Administration Granted On Order

Administration of all and Singular the goods, chattel and
credits of Philip Carrel Deceased is granted to Ephraim Cellars (Sellers?) of
Said County.
(The widow of the Deceased having relinquished her right of
administration) the court directs Bonds to be given in the sum of one
hundred dollars John Henderson & John Wolf approved of as Securities. Abraham
Crabb, Jacob Shell (Shull?) & John Wolf appointed appraisers of all and
Singular the goods chattels and Credits of the Deceased.

>From "Common Pleas Journal B page 153, Jefferson County,
Ohio, Monday 18th June 1814".

Then there is another Jefferson Co. document dated 1813 that
states that Philip Carrel died in the service of the United States, and
establishes his wife as Mary, and lists their nine children as John, Mary,
Margaret, Joseph, Anthony, Catherine, Henry, Jane and Philip.  Further court
documents dated 1814 find the first four children in court choosing Ephraim
Cellars to be appointed as their guardian, which the court did.  These
guardianship documents also give those children's birth dates, but not
place.  John the oldest was born in 1798. That is all I know about those nine
children except for Anthony Wayne Carrel, my 3 x great grandfather, the
middle child born in 1806 somewhere in Western Pennsylvania.  He apparently told
his own children later that when word arrived of his father's death his
mother gave him away to a neighbor or family acquaintance to raise (when he was
seven years old).
We don't know who that person was.  Could it also be
Cellars?  His obituary states he was born 20 February 1806 in Western PA, and
raised in Central OH.
He died in 1882 in Olathe, KS.  He has over 1000 descendants.

Except that Ephraim Cellars was appointed guardian of the
oldest four of these eight other children in 1814, I don't know anything
else about them yet.  Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.  I
would also like to discover Philip and Mary Carrel's parents names, and where
they were from.
It occurs to me that the descendants of the Carrel children
who Cellars cared for in some way may have the answers.  I have often
thought that Ephraim Taylor Carrel (Carle) and Mary Irwin might have been
Philip's parents, but cannot prove it.  I'll send that to you next.

Eric Olson, Seattle

I cannot find any other of the records of the Administration of this estate, neither the inventory, a statement of debts and credits, disbursement of preceeds, list of heirs, etc. in Jefferson County, or in the filmed records at FHL of the probate records of Jefferson County.

Where could these records be lurking?

Ephraim Cellars of Jefferson Co.

Still on the trail of Philip and Mary Carrel....

Frederick Weals has sent me his wife Helen's genealogical
research in Jefferson County, Ohio, which contains another reference to
Ephraim Cellars being appointed Administrator of Philip Carrel's estate.
Helen Weals passed away last summer and the following information is the result
of her work.
Frederick Weals is descended from the Cellars of Jefferson
Co.  As you know Ephraim Cellars was also appointed Administrator of four of
Philip and Mary Carrel's children in 1818/19.  The guardian was James Torrence.
 Ephraim's wife was Elizabeth.
I'll try to summarize Helen's findings.  It is believed that:

Johannes (Hans) Keller immigrated to America in 1732 and died ca. 1796 in Maryland.
His sons were George Keller,
Thomas Keller (who changed the name to Cellar),
John Keller and
Joseph Keller (who also changed the name to Cellar).
There were also four daughters including
Susannah (Keller) Dixon and
Rebecca (Keller) McCamis who both lived and died in Jefferson Co., Ohio.

Joseph Cellar (born 1740/50 Maryland, died intestate, 1813,
Ohio) married a Davidson.  He was said to be a hunter in Pennsylvania.  They
had children, at least George, Isaac, Ephraim, and Elizabeth (Betsy - born
13 April 1797 in Jefferson Co., Ohio), and probably also James and Sally.

The Spencer Ledger (which represents the 1804-1811 record of
tradesman John Galbraith's mercantile business in Steubenville) lists
"CELLARS - James, wheelright, p. 161; Ephraim, brother of James, p. 242;
George, brother of James Cellars, wheelright, p. 168, 411; Sally, sister of
James, p. 97.  They all live nr McGrew's mill."

The above indicates to me (Eric) that Ephraim Cellars of
Jefferson County, Ohio, who administered Philip Carrel's estate and was
guardian of at least four of Philip Carrel's children, was a brother to James
Cellars.  (James Cellars was granted a lot of land in Cross Creek and perhaps
Warren Township in 1808.)  Ephraim Cellars also administered the estate of
Joseph Cellars (his father?) who died 10 August 1813.  Elizabeth's (Betsy)
birth date of 1797 indicates that their father Joseph Cellars was in
Jefferson Co. long before 1808.

I have to wonder, what was the connection between Ephraim
Cellars and Philip Carrel, and did it go back to Pennsylvania, or even
Maryland?  Were they hunters or soldiers or Indian fighters together, or were
they just neighbors in Ohio in 1813.  Were they possibly related?  Why would
Ephraim Cellars take on the administration of Philip Carrel's estate, and
why would he assume the guardianship of Philip's children?  (SEE BELOW = Ephraim was NOT the guardian of the Carrel kids, butWAS the administrator of the estate of Philip Carrel.)

There were
certainly Carrolls in Pennsylvania and Maryland when Ephraim's father Joseph
there.  And was it a Cellars who took and raised Anthony Wayne Carrel somewhere
in central Ohio?  There were Cellars in Delaware County, Ohio: a Thomas
Cellar, and a John and a George Cellar who served in the War of 1812 from
that county.

NOTE:  I just looked-up and found at OHS that Phillip
Carroll listed as a soldier of the War of 1812 from Ohio served with a George
Cellers, both in Captain Robert Gilmore's Company.  Ephraim had a brother
George Cellars.
Perhaps Philip and George were army buddies...

The OHS has the rosters on line and searchable.  You will
find three Cellars; the other two from Delaware County, Ohio.  They are
probably descendants of Thomas Keller/Cellar (1741-1816) and his 2nd
wife Sarah Flanagan (1754-1823).  Try this URL.

http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/database/rosters.html

As for the county of Captain Robert Gilmore's Company,
listed as unknown, I once did a study of all 130 or so names on that roster and
compared them to the 450 or so heads-of-household on the 1830 census for
Jefferson and found terrific matches including both officers and privates.  Over
30 names were exactly the same, both surname and given, as I recall,
including some rather unusual names, and including Robert Gilmore himself.  Also
my Philip Carrel/Carroll is independently known to be from Jefferson
County, and he was in Gilmore's Company.  Circumstantial I know, but I can
say with confidence that Gilmore's Company was probably from
Jefferson County, Ohio.

Now I must make a correction regarding Ephraim Cellars of
Jefferson County, Ohio.  Ephraim was NOT the guardian of the Carrel kids, but
WAS the administrator of the estate of Philip Carrel.  The guardian
was James Torrence.  I rechecked my files, and I was looking at the
old documents wrong.  Sorry...kinda...but I did find the Spencer Ledger
reference which contains information about both Cellars and Carrel.  That
may be found in:

The PIONEER COLLECTION of Jefferson County, Ohio by Dohrman
J. Sinclair, (Commercial Press, Stephens City, Virginia, 1984) pp. 70-94.
The ledger itself is at the Jefferson County Historical Society
according to Helen Weals' documents.
