FROM GEORGIA

I tried to read the names that Sherry could not decipher.  The 3 year old

male is Job Lackey and based on the J in Job the 15 year old could be James

listed as Jas.  In later census records there is a Lafayette Lackey about

that age.  The transcriber for Ancestry listed him as Irae Lackey so

possibly it is Fae but it looks like a J to me.  Martha J. is later called

Jennie so it probably Martha Jane.

XENIA DAILY GAZETTE AND TORCHLIGHT
WEDNESDAY EVENING - AUGUST 7, 1889
XENIA, OHIO
GREENE COUNTY

Jacob SELLERS (colored) was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina
on the 15th day of March, 1817. When he was about 30 years old, he was
joined in marriage with Laura WILLIAMS. They lived in North Carolina
until the troublesome times of 1860, when he resolved to find a home in
the North. They started on the 6th day of November (The day that Lincoln
was elected) they crossed the line and left his native state forever.
Traveling was slow, with all his earthly possessions in a one horse wagon
that had to be stopped occasionally to have his papers examined before he
could go on, so that it was nearly Spring when he got to his friends in
Ohio. In 1874 he became converted to the Christian faith and joined the
Baptist church in Harveysburg and has ever since been a faithful and
esteemed member. He died after a long sickness on the 15th day of July
1889, leaving a wife and four children to mourn his loss, seven children
having gone before.
In politics he was a strong Republican saying that the party that had
done so much for his race should have his support.

Warren County OhArchives Obituaries.....Gallaher, William April 14, 1895

The Western Star
WILLIAM GALLAHER
CLOSE OF A LIFE’S WORK SPENT ALMOST ENTIRELY WITHIN WARREN COUNTY

The funeral services of the late William Gallaher were held at the residence south of Lebanon on Wednesday afternoon of last week and were largely attended. They were conducted by Rev. J. P. Porter, of the Methodist church, and from the paper which he read, the STAR is permitted to make the following extracts:

Before the beginning of this century which is now nearing its close, a young couple, Samuel and Sarah Gallaher, came from near Pittsburg. Descending the Ohio river on a flatboat, and landed at Columbia, just above Cincinnati. This was in the year 1795. During the same year Mr. Gallaher came to Lebanon to build a mill for Mr. Henry Taylor, the first settler in the town of Lebanon, for which Mr. Taylor gave him, according to contract, one hundred acres of land just south of Turtlecreek, a part of which is now within the corporation of Lebanon. This farm Mr. Gallaher very soon traded to Mr. Jonas Simmons for the farm lying just north of the Hart schoolhouse, which is still in the possession of his descendants.

Here Mr. and Mrs. Gallaher reared a large family of sons and daughters, all but one of them coming to manhood and womanhood. And here the mother died in 1862, in her eighty ninth year, the father having died in 1833, while on a business trip to Cincinnati. There were twelve members of this pioneer family, eight sons and four daughters. Of these Harvey married Ann Williams, a native of this county, a sister of Milton Williams, who for many years a prominent attorney of Lebanon. He settled in Clinton county, where his family was brought up and where some of them still reside. John married Nancy Sellers and emigrated to Clinton county, Ind. Another brother, Laomi, also made his home near to his brother in this neighboring state. James married Miss Reform Coffeen and purchased a farm near Red Lion, where he died of cholera in 1835. Milton was the victim of consumption and died in young manhood at his father’s home. Matilda married Britton Baird and they made their permanent home in Jay county, Ind. Mary married Aaron James; their home was in Warren county, but she lived only a short time after her marriage. Elizabeth became the wife of John Sellers and lived near Springboro until about two years ago, at which time she died at the great age of ninety six years. Catharine was the wife of William Gallaher; her home was in Warren county until after the death of her husband, when she went to Kansas with her family, where she has since died. Carvel, the youngest of the family, married Cynthia Ann Keenan and became possessed of the homestead, where he still lives with his son. He is the only surviving member of this large family, whose lives were so intimately associated with the early history of this county.

William, the fifth son, the subject of this sketch, was born April 4, 1808, and died April 14, 1895, being just ten days over eighty-seven years of age. His home, throughout his long life, has been in Warren county, except, perhaps, one year, which he spent in Clinton county, and he had lived on the farm where he died fifty-one years.

He was united in marriage in 1834 to Miss Mary Jane Corwin, also a native of Warren county, a daughter of Benjamin And Rebecca Corwin. She was a niece of the Hon. Thomas Corwin.

Five children were the result of this union, three sons and two daughters. One son died in infancy. The oldest son died of typhoid fever at the age of twenty-three. Sarah married Peter Sellers. Ann married Albert Wilkins; her home is in Cincinnati. And the remaining one, Mr. William Francis Gallaher, has alwas [sic] occupied the homestead.

The wife and mother of his children died May 13, 1870. For nearly twenty-five years Mr. Gallaher has been a widower and his home has been with his son, where he will be very greatly missed, so greatly was he interested in the members of the household, and they, in turn, ardently attached to him.”

Hi Marie & all,

I don't know if its of interest to anyone, but I can identify the Sellers in Warren County, Ohio, mentioned in the biosketch & obituary for William Gallaher.

Nancy Sellers, wife of John H. Gallaher, and John Sellers, husband of Elizabeth Gallaher, were siblings. They were descendants of the Sellers from Rockingham County, Virginia, that descended from Heinrich Zeller (17 Aug 1704 - ca 1773) from Germany.

Nancy and John were two of the four children born to Jacob Sellers (3 March 1766 - 11 Feb 1853) and his 1st wife, Christena Runkle (2 Feb 1771 - 31 Aug 1807). Jacob moved the family from the McGaheysville area of Rockingham County, VA, to the Lebanon area of Warren County, Ohio, about 1798. He had followed his 1st cousin, Peter Sellers, the son of Adam Sellers (1742 - 1821). All of the Sellers that settled in and around Lebanon were from Rockingham County, VA.

Another Peter Sellers, mentioned as the husband of Sarah Gallaher in the same biosketch, also descended from the Rockingham County, VA, Sellers. Peter (27 Oct 1834 - 29 June 1896) was the son of George Sellers and Anna Sellers. George and Anna were 2nd cousins. George was a sibling of Nancy and John Sellers mentioned above. Thus, Peter Sellers was a nephew of Nancy and John. Peter was the 11th of 12 children born to George and Anna and was the last surviving member of the family when he died in 1896.

I have done quite a bit of research on the Sellers in Warren County, OH, that were from Rockingham County, VA, as they were all cousins to me. I have info on the children and descendants of the Sellers mentioned above and would be more than happy to share/help if anyone needs info.

"The History of Greene County, Ohio, 1881" by R. S. Dills (Dayton, Ohio: Odell & Mayer, Publishers, 1881). Xenia was in Greene County, OH, not in PA. The biosketch about John M. Sellers reads as follows:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
John M. Sellers, carpenter, Xenia, was born in the year 1824. Is a son of Jacob S. and Susan Sellers, who were both born in Warren County, Ohio, and had a family of seven children, Henrietta, John M., Lucinda, Elizabeth, Cynthia, Newton, and Jane S. John, the subject of this sketch, was married, in 1846, to Miss Olive Holcomb, by whom he had two children, both daughters;, Millie, the eldest, who died in her twenty-first year, and Clara, now living with her parents. He enlisted in Company H, Ninety-Fourth Ohio Volunteers, in 1862, and had a taste of battle at Tates' Ford, Kentucky, and after many long and tedious marches, was discharged in November, 1862. Received a common school education in Warren County, Ohio, where he spent the principal portion of his life. Removed to this city in April, 1852, where he has since remained. A portion of the time he was engaged in the grocery business, and the balance of his life has been spent at his trade. By his faithfulness, and ! strict attention to business, he has gained a full share of patronage from the people of this county. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for twenty-six years, and is today one of the influential men of the town.

"Reading German Church & Civil Records" by Robert (Bob) Rau Church records are generally the most important records for doing genealogical research on German-speaking people, both in this country and in the European homeland. These records are usually handwritten in some form of German script, although they can also contain varying amounts of French (in and around Alsace-Lorraine), Latin (especially Catholic records) or other languages used locally where Germans lived. This presentation will present and discuss examples of Indexes and Family Pages, Birth/Baptismal records, Confirmation records, Marriage records, and Death/Burial records. A listing of some key words useful in deciphering such records will be provided, along with a listing of some references and sources useful in reading German church records.

About the Speaker
Robert (Bob) Rau has been interested in genealogy for over twenty five years, and has been researching his and his wife's ancestral lines, all of which go back into Germany and Alsace-Lorraine. He has done extensive research in the microfilmed LDS (Mormon) records, and has been a non-member librarian, specializing in German research, at the LDS Family History Center in Cincinnati for over twenty years. He has made numerous trips to Germany and to Salt Lake City to further his research, and has made presentations on various aspects of German genealogy and Cincinnati and Southeastern Indiana German church history to adult education classes and local, state and national genealogical societies. He was active in the microfilming of German Lutheran and Evangelical church records from Cincinnati and Southeastern Indiana, and is a member of numerous genealogical societies.

[VAROCKIN] Methods of westward migration from Rockingham County

I've been reading this thread with interest, and I think I can add a bit of
a firsthand account which might shed at least a little light on things.  Can't
speak for all of the trails and ways that were taken, only this one.

In about 1798 Peter Sellers, son of Adam Sellers, Sr. and Barbara Teeter, left
Rockingham County and settled in a portion of Hamilton County, OH, that later
became Warren County, OH, in about 1802.  Peter's 3rd child, Dr. Adam Sellers
(July 4, 1802 - Mar. 13, 1894) wrote a letter to one of his cousins dated June
28, 1887, in which he described the trip his father had taken in 1798 from
Rockingham County, VA, to Ohio.  Dr. Adam had become familiar with the
directions as his grandfather, also named Adam Sellers, had used the same path
in 1815 to migrate from Rockingham County to Clearcreek Township, Warren County,
OH.  Dr. Adam Sellers himself had used the very same path to make his own trip
to Rockingham County, VA, and back to Warren County, OH, in 1823 when he had
Power of Attorney for the estate of his maternal grandfather, Peter
Runkle. Thus, he had firsthand knowledge of the path and trip.  In his June 28,
1887, letter, Dr. Adam Sellers described the trip from Rockingham County, VA, to
Warren County, OH, as follows:

"My father [Peter Sellers] immigrated, with other families, soon after Wayne’s
treaty with the Indians, say 1798, by way of the Monongehala and Ohio rivers,
from Brownsville, Penn. [k]nown as Red Stone. Their horses were brought through
from that point along Indian trails. Their wagons and other effects were floated
down in family boats, to Columbia, then known as Round Bottom, five miles above
Cincinnati, then called Lousantiville."

Can't say that I can find any argument with Dr. Adam's account of how they got
from Rockingham County, VA, to Warren County, OH.  Brownsville, PA, sits right
on The Monongahela River, which then runs into the Ohio River at Pittsburgh, PA,
and flows straight on to Cincinnati.  According to present maps, its 209 miles
from Elkton, VA, to Brownsville, PA, and then 289 miles from Brownsville, PA, to
Cincinnati, OH.  Would've made the trip be roughly 500 miles from around Elkton,
VA, to Cincinnati, OH.

Hope that helps.
