Hi Everybody, Her is some more information from the book. The Other Side of Local History by W.R. Landman, copyright-Sept., 1995 DANIEL BOONE AND DANIEL MORGAN were wagoners assigned to duty on Braddock's ill-fated march to Duquesne. At the onset of the battle, they along with the other wagoners, pulled the pins from the wagon gears, jumped astride the horses, and fled the battle, leaving their wagon charges stranded! They did not stop until they had reached the British outpost at Wills Creek. CHARLES POKE,BILLY DAVIS, AND WILLIAM DUNLAP were early English traders amongst the Indians in our area. Dunlap lived upon Nemacolin's Creek, now known as Dunlap's Creek, in Menallen Twp. Billy Davis was a trader and a prospector who lived in German Twp as early as 1733. He is first mentioned in the journals of Captain Moore of Redstone. Poke wa a trader already amongst the Delawares when Gist arrived here in 1749. His name is mentioned in Gists Ohio Company Journal of 1751. "THE LAND OF INDIAN PETER" was the area across the river from Redstone Old Fort. Indian Peter owned title to this land shortly after he left the Beesontown area of FAyette Co. Peter Street in Uniontown is named after him. A ferry began to run between here and Brownsville starting in 1755 by Thomas Cresap. Cresap owned title to the lands around old Fort Burd at Redstone. He sold his interests to Thomas and Basil Brown in 1779. Brownsville was named after the brothers, and was laid out surrounding Ft.,Burd. This was originally the camp of the Delaware Chief, Nemacolin. The land of Indian Peter is today West Brownsville. TO BE CONTINUED............. Linda

Hi Everybody, For those who are interested, here is some more from the book,The Other Side of Local History by W.R. Landman, copyright-September 1995 THE 7TH AND 13TH VIRGINIA REGIMENTS were raised in Fayette,Greene,Washington and Westmoreland Counties of Southwestern Pa. These regiments fought bravely in the Revolutionary War under Generals Washington and Green, THE 8TH PA. REGIMENTwas troops raised in Fayette and Green Counties for service against local hostile Indians in the British interests during the Revolutionary War. Against protests from local residents, they were moved east to Valley Forge in the winter of 1775-1776. Along the forced march, many died from the extreme cold of winter. The fame of this heroic,mid-winter march spread throughout the colonies. MORGAN'S RIFLEMAN-All members of this famous outfit of military rifleman were recruited from the counties just north of the Mason-Dixon line. These counties included Fayette and Greene, and these men began service during the Revolutionary War. LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION-All of the boasts made for this famous expedition were constructed on the Monongahela River at the towns of Wilson's Port(now New Geneva), and Greensburg. Many of the men who accompanied this trip were also from our area. TO BE CONTINUED......... Linda

Here's some more from the book "The Other Side of Local History by W.R. Landman, copyright-Sept.1995 1. HENRY BEESON; The founder of the city of Uniontown, which was once called Beesontown. He and his brother Jacob Beeson also laid out the plan of the city into streets, lanes and lots. The first lots were ,amazingly enough, offered for sale througha public lottery. 2. EPHRAIM DOUGLAS: This man once wrote a letter to a distant friend describing Fayette County in such a grandeur way that he was placed on the list. The letter is contained in full in Ellis History of the county and in works by the late Judge Veech. 3. DR. JOHN F. BRADDEE: Fayette County's outlaw persona supreme. His rise from the dregs of the wilderness to fame and fortune cannot be rivaled. He had it all, yet foolishly gambled on crime to provide him with more yet. He remained a colorful figure through all of his days in our area, and up to his untimely death in prison. The closed thing we have to our won local Jesse James. TO BE CONTINUED............ Linda

Here is the final segments on Historical Scraps taken from the book The Other Side of Local History by W.R.Landman, copyright Sept 1995 THE BATTLE OF STICKLE HOLLOW-was a labor=management duel in the 1890's coal strike. Supporters of the National Union met near Star Junction in Fayette County, and were ambushed and chased by armed gun thugs and Coal and Iron Police. The people fled up into surrounding corn and wheat fields, where many were killed and left for dead. The full effects of this massacre lingered on many years. It is said that the next year , during the harvest season, scores of skelttones of the dead were found lying in the fields surrounding the area. The perpetrators, mine company hired thugs were never indicted or prosecuted. CONRAD WEISER-was the first settler/trader to come over the mountains into what is now FAyette County. He visited Nemacolin in his hunting camp in 1738. Trveling over "Nemacolin's Path" to FAyette County, he opened the trail for Virginiatraders like William Dunlap, whose name was later applied to the ancient pathway. "That's all folks!" Linda

What I'm trying to convey is that you may find some folks you've thought
of as Fayette people either in Leckey's listing (pgs 155-163) or out
there at this site: =20

http://members.xoom.com/Clair1st/index/census/index.html
Pages 13-16 cover what is now Greene County but the townships then were
larger than they are today!  There is also a nice series of maps showing
the evolution of Washington County and its townships.=20

Specifically, I've found in Washington/Greene Co. 1790 Census family
members whose descendants have lived for more than 100 years in
Fayette:=20

James DAVIS (multiples)
Peter LIVENGOOD
John McCANN (uncertain connection for me)
John MOORE=20
Joseph, Levi, and Jonathan MORRIS
John ROSS and his sons John, Robert, and William Ross

And, not in my tree but surnames which I have and/or associate with
Fayette are:

BOWERS, John and Jacob
CARROLL, George
CORBLEY, Rev. John
DAUGHERTY, James and Elizabeth

found one needs to do as these names are not all in alpha order.
