BARNWELL DISTRICT, SOUTH CAROLINA (made in 1798 from ORANGEBURG)
lays next to same and Bamberg, Allendale, Aiken Co, SC
and Burke Co, GA

=

Barnwell County was settled in the early 1700's by pioneers wishing to adventure into the "back country". By the 1740's, Palatine settlers entered the picture spreading throughout Orangeburg District. By the end of the Revolutionary War, many settlers obtained grants in Barnwell County. Most were from North Carolina and Virginia. Barnwell was actually a district within Orangeburg until the late 1780's. At this time, Winton District was created and the Barnwell name wasn't used again until 1798.

Charles Woodward's origins are unknown. He was born in about 1755, possibly in North or South Carolina, Virginia, or Connecticut, and in 1804 purchased land called Pole Cat Pond in Barnwell District, South Carolina
=
http://www.cas.sc.edu/iss/SCNames/index.php?action=showPage&book=2&volume=18&page=43
Also in the Court of Equity Records is the case of
Carpus Woodward versus Judith Woodward, Edward
W. Wade, 1833, over a piece of land with the unbeliev-
able name of Pole Cat Pond.23 And even more un-
believable Pole Cat Pond appears on Mill's Atlas.24
Could this pond have been named for anything other
than the odoriferous little animal known as a skunk?
Pole Cat Pond lay between Williston and Aiken.
====
The Rev. John Henry Cornish of St. Thaddeus Church would write:
"...Several shells came whizzing by us from a battery on Railroad Avenue... Two shells went through the house at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Laurens Street; one struck in the yard of the old parsonage...The enemy came nearly to the street passing the west end of the Aiken Hotel...The bugles sounded a charge. It is a marvelous what a different aspect was thrown over the scene in an instant. The horses started and came tearing down Richland Street, the men rising in their stirrups, with their pistols in their hands, yelling and screaming, each one looking as if he could devour a dozen Yankees...The enemy was driven back. There was a fight also in Williams' old field. The enemy was driven back to Pole Cat Pond (Montmorienci)...Five of our wounded were brought to my house where the surgeons attended to them...Two of the killed were taken to the (St. Thaddeus) church yard, where they were put in coffins and buried."

It is a little singular that Wagner in its final struggle was commanded by Colonel Lawrence M. Keitt          of Orangeburg; garrisoned largely by Orangeburg troops, and the preparations for evacuation and boat
transportation were in charge and supervision of Colonel Olin M. Dantzler of Orangeburg. During the siege of   Wagner the Yankees had established a picket post at the mouth of Vincentís Creek on the James Island side. On     the night of the fourth day of August, Captain Henry Sellers of the Twenty-fifth took a detail, attacked this post      and captured the whole Yankee picket force and brought them back with him. He had one man killed (Furtick);    his body was brought back also.
