A friend of mine has a history of the Scots immigration to America during the 17th and 18 centuries. It is mostly concerned with, but not limited to, those who settled in the Carolinas. Basically, the Scots were either Highlanders or Lowlanders. Most Highlanders came directly from Scotland to America. Many of the Lowlanders crossed the Irish Sea and settled in NE Ireland in the Ulster area. When they later came here, they were often referred to as "Ulster Scots" or "Scotch-Irish". The reason given for their departure from the lowlands to Ireland, was the over taxation by the Brits on their lands, their livestock and the fruits of their labor. The Highlanders, on the other hand, were more independent minded and were more scattered and had no love for the Brits. They produced little from the soil and raised sheep for meat and clothing.
What it all boils down to is that the Lowlanders left to escape the oppression of the Brits, and most of them landed in the North. The Highlanders left because they wanted to--and most landed in the South.
If you are interested, I'll try to locate the book. My friend passed away a couple of years ago, but his wife still lives in the same house.

ksellers [cksellers@nc.rr.com] = CARL, thanks.
We Need any and all connections of SELLERS in SCOTLAND.

We Need Ship Lists of Immigrants on SELLERS from SCOTLAND.

James Marlowe mentioned a Scottish connection on upper Cape Fear River of mid 1700's prior to the Edgecome Co, NC group.
We/I have not separated these groups. And our proven Sellers were here in 1730's and appear to be same from VA .

But, some of the NC SELLERS names DO appear to be Scottish.
But, we haven't proven ALL of these Immigrants either. YES, we have Wm. SELLERS ca 1630 from England.
We have Sellers born IRELAND/GERMANY, but, I don't think we show an Early SELLERS born Scotland.

HELP where you can.

That's a good site Marie.  I will see John McPhaul's widow next week and borrow the other book she has that is more detailed insofar as Scottish immigration is concerned.

CARL, thanks.
I took a fast look for Scotland rosters on ships and I couldn't find anything. I do Not belong to Ancestrys World Collection which gives Scotland info. don't know about immigrations.

Does ANYONE from a roster of Scotland immigrants? Please advise.

I do see some of these names on our Scotland page, but many years before ours in US.
http://www.sellers-sellars-sollars-zellars.net/scot.htm

I believe there is some duplication on there that needs deleted. sorry.

Lets study and try and get info on any of our SELLERS from this area or even info in NC on Scots.
Scots, Scots-Irish, Scots-High, Scots-Low, etc. All may be important.

They may have also married into the Scots in NC?
But, we do have SELLERS in Scotland, per above records. With Alexander and Angus Sellers!

Thank you. marie, iowa

Marie  -  In the introduction of the book, the author states that this is a history of the Scots who emigrated from the Scottish Highlands, and the off shore islands, to the Carolinas.  One of the sources he cites is a friend of mine named John McPhaul, now deceased.  I once told you about another book that I had access to, and it was a long time coming--that book belonged to Jack McPhaul, and it was about that time when he became very ill and died about one month later.  Thus the reason for the long delay.  To the point--Jack knew many of the Sellers/Sellars clan from Robeson Co.,(where Jack's family came from), Cumberland Co., and Bladen Co.  Descendants from those Sellers/Sellars families still reside in those areas, and most are still Presbyterians, as were their ancestors in Scotland.  I can find no definitive statement in the book that says positively that all those Sellers/Sellars were derived from Scottish ancestry, however, I also cannot find any statement that says they are other than Scots.

Marie  -  For the edification of those who asked, all the Sellers/Sellars families in my mini-report came from Scotland.

I believe that Palentine/Palatine is an area in Germany, This may be
the area of origination for your family.
Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_American has a good
explanation of this migration.

SCOT- IRISH

The Scot-Irish of Rowan County North Carolina

THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA The James Sprunt Historical Publications
PUBLISHED UNDER THE DIRECTION OF The North Carolina Historical Society,
      J. G. de Roulhac Hamilton, Editor, Henry McGilbert Wagstaff, Editor VOL.
      16 No. 1

The chief contributors to the population were the Scotch-Irish
Presbyterians from the north of Ireland, the Germans, usually known as
Pennsylvania Dutch, who adhered to the tenets of the Lutheran and German
Reformed Churches, and the Moravians, or United Brethren, from Moravia
and Bohemia. From time to time men belonging to no one of these groups
came to the frontier, but such settlers formed a small part of the total
number of inhabitants. The Scotch-Irish were the most active and probably
the most numerous part of the population. These people were Scotch in
blood, being descendants of the Scotch whom the English rulers had placed
on the confiscated lands of Irish rebels in the Province of Ulster, in
north Ireland, during the seventeenth century. To distinguish them from
the natives of Scotland they have received the name of Scotch-Irish.
Some forty years prior to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War they
began to flock to America. Foote, in his "Sketches of North Carolina,"
assigns their migration to three causes, namely: religion, politics, and
property. Disabilities were imposed upon them because they were not
members of the established church of Ireland; they desired more political
liberty than they enjoyed in the old world; and the ease with which land
could he obtained in America was a third powerful incentive to their
coming hither. Some came to Charleston and pushed into the frontier
country from that place, but most of them landed in Pennsylvania and,
after making some settlements in that. province, turned southward, and
by1739 located in the Valley of Virginia. The administration in Virginia
was constantly opposed to religious freedom. Earl Granville disposed of
his lands in Carolina upon favorable terms, for he desired to increase
their value by rapid settlement. Therefore, influenced by the inviting
nature of the climate and soil, the peacefulness of the Catawba Indians
and the laxity of North Carolina laws in comparison with those of
Virginia on the subject of religion, the Scotch-Irish passed through the
vacant lands in Virginia, in the neighborhood of their countrymen, and
made homes for themselves in western North Carolina. As early as 1740 a
few families were located on the Hico, Eno, and Haw rivers in the
territory just east of Rowan. By the year 1745 the Scotch-Irish had
established themselves in the fertile and well-watered area between the
Yadkin and the Catawba, and previous to 1750 their settlements were
scattered throughout the region from Virginia to Georgia. The
Scotch-Irish settled mainly in the country west of the Yadkin. Among
these immigrants were the Nesbits, Allisons, Brandons, Luckeys, Lockes,
McCullochs, Grahams, Cowans, Barrs, McKenzies, Andrews, Osbornes,
Sharpes, Boones, McLauchlins, and Halls. The Scotch-Irish have ever been
known as a religious, brave, and liberty-loving people. Among other
families from the British Isles who appeared in Rowan at an early date we
find the names of Cathey, McCorkle, Morrison, Linville, Davidson, Reese,
Hughes, Ramsay, Brevard, Winslow, Dickey, Braley, Moore, Emerson, Kerr,
Rankin, Torrence, Templeton, Houston, Hackett, Rutherford, Lynn, Gibson,
Frohock, Smith, Bryan, Little, Long, Steele, Bell, Macay, Miller,
Blackburn, Craige, Stokes, Caldwell, Dunn, Gillespie, and many others.

Marie  -  I got this from two different sources:  The Sellers/Sellars clans were lowland Scots located near the border with England.  After many
years of paying tribute to the Brits by way of crops, animals, and taxes, they crossed the sea to Ireland and by and large settled in the
Northeastern part of Ireland.  Most were in the Ulster area.  When they eventually made their way to America, they were called Ulster-Scots or
Scotch-Irish.  I have no information about any German Sellers in Ireland at the time.

I'd appreciate information on Alexander Hendry, born about 1696 in Arran, his wife, Flora Sellers, their son, James, born about 1751 in Arran. They came to New Hanover, N.C. about 1737. James' wife, Mary Murphy, was daughter of Patrick and Elizabeth Kelso Murphy who came to New Hanover on the ship Diana in 1774. Mary was born about 1762.

FROM Davie Campbell [daviecam@blueyonder.co.uk]
Hi Scott, Lorne, John,

I have slightly different on Dugald CAMPBELL.

Like John, I've limited it to 4 generations only.

I have been unable to identify his parents, but likely to be either:

Dugald CAMPBELL b. 21 Jan 1769 at Campbeltown to Alexander CAMPBELL + Euffen McQUEEN Frame No 1108 - GROS 507/00 001A
or
Dugald CAMPBELL b. 1 Sep 1776 at Campbeltown to Donald CAMPBELL + Mary McEWINE Frame No 1103 - GROS 507/00 003

The 1841 Census at Giol farm shows Dugald and Catherine as both aged 60 years - as adults were rounded down to the nearest 5, the 1776 date is most probably correct.

Alexander Sellar was born about 1824 in Keith, Banffshire, Scotland. He was a tailor by trade. He fathered twin sons John and William - born on 1 Feb 1861. In 1864 he had a daughter Ann Ironside, then Elizabeth in 1867. Alexander Sellar does not seem to have lived with the mother of his children. This was a Margaret McKenzie who from census records lived nearby in Keith. Interestingly, the children were known by the McKenzie surname until Banffshire Sheriff Court cases in 1864 and 1865 produced a 'Declaration of Paternity' for each child. After this these children were known as Sellar.

John Sellar became a tailor like his father, Alexander. John had a daughter, Elsie - apparently in 1887. She lived with her father in Keith but was born in the parish of King Edward. This is about 17 miles east of Keith within the old Aberdeenshire boundaries. I cannot find Elsie's birth so it was probably registered under a different surname, but she was known all her life as Elsie Sellars or Sellar. In the early 1900s she emigrated to South Africa along with a relative, Lizzie Phillips from Peterhead.

Does anyone have links to these families, or know more about them?

Thanks

Peter

I am truly overwhelmed by all the birthday wishes - thank you. If you send anymore now then you really will be a day late!

This is John Lambie of the Galston Lambies. His parents were James Lambie & Margaret Muir. I suspect that most of our trees will link into this one someday.

Regards,

Paul

Subject: [LAMBIE] John Lambie of Michigan

Hi,

I ran across John Lambie in a Google book published in 1891 a pioneer of
Clinton County, Michigan. It says that he was born on February 13, 1817
in Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of James and Margaret Lambie. Before he
emigrated in the early 1850's, he married Mary Sellers. They had 9
children, one at least born in Ayrshire - James on April 30, 1843. The
others are Jane, Margaret, Mary, John, Alexander and Robert who were
still living at the time this biography was written. Deceased children
were Matthew and William. After his first wife died, John Lambie
married Nancy Paul.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

There is a two page biography of John and his family that gives a great
deal of detail.

SCOTTISH TARTANS
from Gracie, Oklahoma

I found this while doing research for my line.  My brother's dna test says that we came from the Ireland area, which didn't really surprise me.

>This is a beautiful tartan for our Sellers.

Gracie, the sellers clan left Scotland  under pressure from those who didn't care for the Presbyterian church.  They landed in the Ulster area in Ireland where they were also persecuted because of their religion.  My ancestors landed in Philadelphia and were promptly shipped to the frontier by William Penn who also didn't  care for the Scottish folks.  They ended up in Middletown, dauphin county.

Carl, Marie, and all, I think my Sellerses are Ulster Scots who settled in southeastern Pennsylvania. About two years ago I got an email from a descendant of Hezekiah Sellards of Kentucky (father of the legendary Jennie Sellards Wiley, b. 1760 in PA) regarding a 25-marker (or more) Y-DNA match between her male relative (Jack Sellards) and my father, George Sellers. Jack Sellards is the closest Y-DNA match for our family, but I haven't been able to get any further responses from the Sellards researcher. My farthest-back undisputed relative is Frederick Sellers (1822-1897) who lived in Chester and Montgomery counties.

I am interested in the Dauphin County Sellers family, as is another Sellers researcher that I am in touch with now and then. I am happy to exchange what info I have. I'm not certain how to go about it. My tree is on Ancestry.com and is currently public. Not everything posted there is certain, especially the 18th c. info, but I have tried to be very careful to note what is 100 per cent documented and what is a good guess. I appreciate any info and all help and advice.
