With the approach of cold weather, the new commander of the Virginia
Regiment, George
Washington, ordered Lt. John Bacon of the Maryland forces to leave
Fort Cumberland to oversee construction of two forts on Patterson Creek
to house the ranger companies. By December, both forts were completed and
garrisoned by the rangers. The 2nd company, commanded by Captain
Ashby, was stationed at the fort built " . . . at the Plantation
of Charles Sellars, or the late
McCrackins . . . " 1 now located in Fort Ashby, Mineral
County, West Virginia. From the moment of its occupation until its
demise, the fort took the name of its first commander; it was referred
to as Ashby's Fort.

My recent days of research in Moorefield and Romney, WV discovered two
outstanding items that are new to me though others may have known.
1. In 1790, Frederick Selle(a)rs listed himself and two nephews as the
responsible parties for a lease of 95 acres in Hardy Co., WV, a lease we
have all
often found cited in legal records of the period.
In the deed of lease dated Dec. 4, 1790, Frederick Sellars "of the county
of
Hardy" states that he and Henry Sellars and Elias Sellers (spelling from
the
deed), the latter "sons to his brother" will be the parties to
have and to
hold the property. The brother was unnamed.
(Tax lists, sometimes used as a census in this time period, show Henry and
Frederick in Hardy County, but I don't remember Elias being listed in the
county.)
The lease of the land was from Denny Fairfax, the nephew and heir of the
deceased Lord Fairfax, of land received in a grant from the King of England.
The
younger Fairfax discovered the lands already occupied in many cases, and
sometimes the Commonwealth of Virginia had granted the same land to someone
else. In order to avoid great legal difficulties, he decided to lease such lands
to their occupants. In this way, Frederick Sellers leased 95 acres on the
West Side of the South Branch of the Potomac in the survey made by George
Murray
of Fairfax's South Branch Manor.
See Deed Book 2, Hardy County, WV, page 200.
2. Records of the North Mill Creek Lutheran and Reformed Church, copied by
the WPA in the 1930s and retyped in the 1960s, show Henry and Magdalene Zeller
as members. Copies of these records are at the Hardy County Public Library
in Moorefield. The log church was in a nearby area of neighboring Grant
County, WV, at the junction of North Mill Creek and South Mill Creek, near
Petersburg. The papers were fragments when found in the 1930s, but appear to
show
births, deaths, christenings, and membership. Zeller names are Catherine,
Elizabeth, George, Henry, Jonas, Magdalena, Margaret, and Mary.
Our Hardy County records on Sellers-Zellers show many more connections from
these names.

During a visit to the Virginia State Library last week, I copied
out the
following entry from Volume C, Hardy County, VA (now WV) Record
of Surveys:
"Survey Number 643
1st of June 1824
By virtue of part of a land office Treasury warrant for 400 Acres
No. 4960
issued to James Moseley the 2nd of November 1812, entered the 26th
of May
1824, I have surveyed for Thomas Sollars (assignee) of Reuben Davis
who was
(assignee) of James Moseley, a tract of land in Hardy County on
the waters
of New Creek...containing 50 acres."
Andrew Aronhalt
The surveyor, Andrew Aronhalt, entered the complicated landmarks
as the
bounds of the property where I have put the periods.
Later Hardy County, VA land records show that Thomas Sollars and
Jane, his
wife, sold 50 Acres on "Tibs Run" on May 8, 1826 for $25.
Hope this helps someone.

Journal of Captain Charles Lewis of Fredericksburg, Virginia,
when in
the service of the colony of Virginia in the year 1755.
Oct 24 - A very wet day. We marched to Patterson's Creek, on which
we
encamped in a deserted house. We found here
good corn, wheat and pasturage .
. . Colonel Washington marched before Captain
Ashby's company of Rangers - 14
miles.
Oct 25 - Marched from Patterson's Creek
and passed many deserted
houses. I was this day very curious in the
examination of the mischief done in
the houses, and was shocked at the havoc
made by the barbarous and cruel Indians. At
one, Mecraggin's
[James McCracken, near Ft. Ashby], I found
the master of the
family, who had been buried but slightly
by his family and friends, after his
assassination, half out of the grave
and eaten by the wolves; the house burnt,
the cornfield laid waste
and an entire ruin made. At half-after six
we arrived at Fort Cumberland, cold and
Hungry. We had this day, by Major Lewis's
order, two women ducked for robbing the
deserted houses - 20 miles.
