MARRIAGES =

There were three principal sources of settlement in Jackson County, from the Kanawha, Greenbrier, Rockbridge and Botetourt Settlements by way of Point Pleasant; from Green County, Pa., Morgantown and the Lower Monongahela, down the Ohio River, and from Cheat Valley River, Buckhannon, Hacker’s Creek and Harrison County, first by the upper or lower route, but later, say after 1804, overland on packhorses.

STREET FAMILY

Old George Street followed his children, who had married William H. and Janet Ludwick. He bought the Rader farm, on the divide between Little Creek and Buffalo.

He donated the lot for the graveyard, and for a church, and did most of the work in building the church, Buffalo or Street’s Church, until disabled. One day, while hauling logs for the church, he ran a splinter in his foot, which resulted in his death, from lockjaw.

ALKIRE FAMILY

Alexander Alkire lived near the Hydes, in Grant District. His wife was a Sims, and a sister of Hyde's wife.

An Adam Alkire lived at Muse's Bottom

JACKSON CO., WV

August term, 1831: At this term the second grand jury was empaneled as follows: Andrew Lewis, foreman. (The first jury could not have entirely disappeared from the county, as does the name of John Cabot from English history, for it will be remembered that Andrew Lewis was foreman of the first grand jury, the action of which there is no record.) And William Hughs, Andrew Flesher, jr., Andrew Flesher, sr., David Woodruff, Jesse Hughs, David Sayre, Ezekiel Sayre, Elijah Staats, Thomas Hughs, John Harpold, Martin Ables, sr., Leonard Hing, David Seaman, Jacob Starcher Joseph. They retired to consider of their presentments, after which they reported the following indictments: Henry Lane John Steed, Robert McKane, John Standley, and Silas Cotrell, upon a charge of assault and battery; John Standley, misdemeanor, George Sellars, petit larceny. In the records of this term it is that "in the hurry of business at the last term" the clerk omitted to record the fact that he took the several oaths required by law, and it is now ordered that the same be entered in the order book nunc protunc.

Same family appears on the 1880 Census in Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia. I'm wondering whether the middle name of George W. Sellers, the son appearing in the household, was Washington?

District #44, Ravenswood, Jackson County, WVA. Enumerated June 19, 1880, and found on Page 479D:

Dwelling #160/Family #170
Sellers, John, MU, M, Age 60, Married, Farmer, Cannot Read/Write, Born WV
Mahala, W, F, Age 50, Wife, Married, Keeping House, Cannot Write, Born WV
George W., MU, M, Age 27, Son, Single, Farmer, Cannot Write, Born WV
Ellizza, MU, F, Age 19, Daughter, Single, Attending School, Cannot Write, Born WV
Mary, MU, F, Age 18, Daughter, Single, Attending School, Cannot Write, Born WV
Nancy J., MU, F, Age 15, Daughter, Single, Cannot Write, Born WV
Andrew, MU, M, Age 14, Son, Single, Cannot Read/Write, Born WV
Thomas, MU, M, Age 10, Son, Single, Cannot Read/Write, Born WV

The varying ages are pretty wild when compared those listed on the 1850, 1860, & 1870 Census to that of the 1880, but the names all fit and I'm positive its the same family. Everyone in the household is listed as Mulatto except for Mahala, who was clearly marked as 'W' for white. Don't know if that triggers any kind of recognition for anyone looking for this family but figured it was worth mentioning.

In two different census of Jackson County, WV my ancestors are listed as

black in one and mullato in the other. I'm the only family member working on

this. My family raise their eyebrows to the notation that are ancestors were

black. All pictures I've seen of are family are white complexion. There was

rumors we were of indian descent. I just don't know. I'm stuck at Henry

Sellers born about 1853. He married the daughter of a French national. Her

name was Eliza "Maggie" Bourgeous (different spellings). There was a Sellers

family in Jackson County that was large. John Sellers (B) and Jane Redman

(M).

I can't prove any connection to this family. There seems to be very little

records of Henry. Only a marriage record and mentioned in obits. No birth or

death record. Never appeared on a census as an adult.

The lack of records makes me wonder if there could be african american or

native indian connection.

Lost,

Mike Sellers

John Smith (c. 1778-1858) was one of the first settlers in old Jackson County, WV, arriving in the valley of the Right Reedy in 1808. He did not know who his parents were, where he was born, or when. For John was captured by Indians when young and after returning to white environs, knew none of these things nor his white name. It has been said that he was adopted by a man named Smith and so took the name John Smith. More on this pioneer can be found at the address below.
